Get a fixed price for your clutch replacement

Your registration is genuinely all we need to start. It tells us the clutch type, whether the car runs a dual mass flywheel, and how long the job takes, which is most of the quote.

We will come back to you the same day with a written price. If you would rather just talk it through, calling is faster and we can usually price it on the phone.

This is all we need to identify your clutch type and price the job accurately.

Self-diagnosis

Does your clutch actually need replacing?

A clutch rarely fails overnight. It warns you first, and the earlier you act the less it costs, because a slipping clutch left alone can score the flywheel and turn a straightforward job into an expensive one. Here is what to listen and feel for.

  • Clutch slipping

The engine revs climb but the car does not accelerate with them, most obviously uphill, in a high gear or under load. The friction plate has lost its grip on the flywheel.

  • Juddering as you pull away

A shudder through the car at the biting point. Usually a worn friction plate, oil contamination from a leaking crank seal, or a failing dual mass flywheel.

  • Spongy or sinking pedal

A soft pedal, or one that sinks to the floor and stays there, points at the hydraulics rather than the clutch itself: normally the master or slave cylinder.

  • Grinding or crunching into gear

Difficulty selecting first or reverse means the clutch is not fully disengaging, so the gearbox input shaft is still turning when you try to change.

  • Burning smell

A hot, acrid smell after pulling away or sitting in traffic. The clutch is overheating and glazing over, which accelerates wear and can score the flywheel.

  • High biting point

If the clutch bites right at the top of the pedal travel, the friction material is worn thin. This is the earliest reliable warning you get, and the cheapest point to act.

A repair is often enough

If the friction plate still has life in it and the fault sits in the hydraulics, the clutch cable, the release bearing or a leaking slave cylinder, you do not need a full kit. A repair is a fraction of the cost, and we will tell you so even though it is the smaller job. We would rather be honest and get your next one.

A full replacement is the only fix when

The friction material is worn out, contaminated with oil, or the flywheel is scored or has excessive play. At that point a new kit is the only lasting repair, because fitting a clutch to a failing flywheel just brings the same symptoms back within months.

Recognise any of these? Call 07427 816536 and we will talk it through. Diagnosis is free and there is no call-out fee anywhere in Colchester.

How your clutch works, and what fails

Your clutch is the link between the engine and the gearbox. Its whole job is to connect and disconnect drive smoothly so you can pull away and change gear without the engine stalling or the gearbox being damaged.

When the pedal is up, a set of strong springs clamps a friction plate hard against the engine's flywheel, so both spin together and the car drives. When you press the pedal, a release bearing pushes on those springs and eases the clamp, letting the flywheel and the plate spin independently. That is the moment you can select a gear.

Wear happens in the fraction of a second between those two states. Every time you pull away, the plate and the flywheel are briefly slipping against each other, and that friction takes a little material off the plate. Do it a few hundred thousand times and there is nothing left to grip with. That is why clutch life depends far more on how and where a car is driven than on its mileage alone: stop-start town driving, towing and hill starts all wear a clutch much faster than motorway miles.

  • Clutch disc (friction plate)

The wearing part. A steel plate faced with friction material that is squeezed against the flywheel to transmit engine power to the gearbox. The friction material wears down over time exactly like a brake pad.

  • Pressure plate (clutch cover)

A sprung steel assembly bolted to the flywheel that clamps the friction plate in place. Its springs weaken with age and heat, which is a common cause of slipping even when the plate still has material left.

  • Release bearing

Pushes on the pressure plate fingers when you press the pedal, releasing the clamp so you can change gear. A worn one is the rumbling or whirring noise that changes as you use the pedal.

  • Flywheel

The heavy disc on the end of the crankshaft that the clutch grips against. It smooths out engine pulses and provides the friction surface. It can be scored or heat-damaged by a clutch left slipping too long.

A clutch kit contains the first three of those parts, which is why they are replaced together as a set. There is no sense in fitting a new friction plate behind a tired pressure plate or a worn release bearing when the gearbox is already out and the labour is already paid for.

Dual mass flywheel replacement

Most diesels built since the late 1990s, and a good number of modern petrols, use a dual mass flywheel rather than a solid one. Instead of a single lump of steel, a DMF is two plates connected by heavy internal springs, which absorb the harsh vibration a diesel engine produces before it reaches the gearbox. It is why a modern diesel feels smooth at low revs.

Those internal springs wear out. A failing DMF gives you rattling at idle that disappears when you dip the clutch, a heavy shudder pulling away, or a distinct knock when you switch the engine off. Because the symptoms overlap almost exactly with a worn clutch, a DMF fault is regularly misdiagnosed as a clutch problem, and vice versa.

This matters commercially, and it is where people get caught out. Fitting a new clutch to a worn-out dual mass flywheel is throwing money away: the judder comes straight back, and the gearbox has to come out a second time to fix it properly. So we measure the flywheel's free play and check its friction face on every single clutch replacement, and we show you what we find before we order parts.

If it is worn, you usually have two options: a replacement dual mass flywheel, or a solid flywheel conversion. A conversion costs less and lasts longer, but it transmits more vibration into the cabin and the gearbox, so it suits a working van far better than a family car. We will tell you which we would fit to our own vehicle and why.

Signs a dual mass flywheel is failing

  • Rattling or chattering at idle that stops the moment you press the clutch pedal
  • A heavy shudder through the whole car as you pull away, rather than a light judder
  • A loud knock or clatter as you switch the engine off
  • Vibration through the gearstick that gets worse under load
  • Judder that returns soon after a clutch was replaced elsewhere

What a clutch replacement includes

One price, and this is everything that is in it. We list it out because “why is a clutch that much?” is the most common question we get, and the honest answer is that a clutch replacement is mostly labour: the gearbox has to come out to reach it.

  • Full clutch kit: friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing
  • Dual mass flywheel inspection, and replacement if it has failed
  • Clutch hydraulics checked: master and slave cylinders
  • Gearbox oil topped up or replaced on refit
  • Crankshaft and gearbox input seals inspected for leaks
  • Road test and biting point checked before we leave
  • 12-month parts and labour warranty
  • We take the old parts and all the packaging away with us

How much does a clutch replacement cost in Colchester?

There is no single honest answer to this, because a clutch on a Fiesta and a clutch on a four-wheel-drive van are different jobs with different parts. What we can promise is that the number we give you before we start is the number you pay. Four things move the price:

  • Your vehicle

A small front-wheel-drive hatchback is far quicker than a four-wheel drive or a transverse-engined diesel where the subframe has to come down to get the gearbox out.

  • Clutch type

A conventional single-plate clutch costs less than a dual mass flywheel or a self-adjusting SAC assembly, both in parts and in labour.

  • Parts choice

We fit OEM-quality kits from LuK, Sachs and Valeo as standard. Performance and heavy-duty options are available if you tow or the van works hard.

  • Anything else worn

Occasionally a slave cylinder, release fork or crank seal needs doing at the same time. You will hear about it before we start, never after.

Why Colchester drivers choose us over a garage

A clutch is not an emergency repair you can walk to. The moment it goes, the real problem is not the clutch, it is being without the car. That is the comparison worth making.

Clutch replacements we have carried out in Colchester

We are not going to show you star ratings we have not earned yet. We are new to asking for reviews, and until there are real ones on a real profile you can check, the only fair thing to put in front of you is what we will actually guarantee in writing.

  • A fixed price, in writing, first

You get the full price before a single bolt is undone. If we find something else wrong, work stops and you decide. The quote never moves on its own.

  • No call-out fee, ever

Coming out to you and diagnosing the fault costs nothing. You are not paying for the privilege of finding out what is wrong.

  • 12-month parts and labour warranty

Both halves matter. Plenty of warranties cover the part but leave you paying the labour to fit it again, which on a clutch is most of the bill.

  • 25 years on clutches specifically

Not a general mechanic who also does clutches. This is the job we do all day, which is why we can quote it accurately from a registration.

  • OEM-quality parts as standard

LuK, Sachs and Valeo kits, the same manufacturers that supply the vehicle makers. No unbranded kits unless you specifically ask for a budget option.

  • Fully insured for work at your home

We carry public liability insurance, so a mechanic working on your driveway is covered properly. Ask and we will show you the certificate.

Clutch replacement questions answered

The things Colchester drivers actually ask us, including the ones people feel awkward asking. If yours is not here, call and ask it.

How long does a clutch replacement take?

Most cars take four to six hours from arrival to road test, and we finish the large majority the same day. Front-wheel-drive hatchbacks are at the quick end. Four-wheel drives, larger vans and some transverse-engined diesels that need the subframe dropping can run to a full day. We tell you which category your car falls into when we quote, so you can plan around it rather than guess.

Can you really do a clutch on my driveway?

Yes, and it is the majority of our work. What we need is reasonably level, solid ground and enough room to work at the side of the car, so a normal driveway, a hardstanding or a workplace car park is fine. Loose gravel or a steep slope is not, because the car has to sit safely on axle stands for several hours. If you are not sure your space works, describe it when you call and we will tell you honestly.

What if it turns out I only need a repair, not a replacement?

Then you pay for a repair, which is far less. This happens regularly: a sinking pedal or a clutch that will not disengage is often a failed slave cylinder or a hydraulic leak rather than a worn clutch. We diagnose before we quote, and we would rather tell you the job is smaller than you feared and keep you as a customer than sell you a kit you did not need.

What if it rains?

Light rain is not a problem, we work under cover of the vehicle and use groundsheets to keep everything clean and dry. Heavy or persistent rain is different: water and open gearboxes do not mix, and we will not compromise the job to keep to a date. If the weather turns we will call you the day before and move it, at no cost. We would rather rearrange once than do it twice.

How soon can you come out?

Often the same day or the next, because we are not working through a garage booking list. It depends mainly on whether your clutch kit is in stock locally, which for most common vehicles it is. If your car is undriveable, say so when you call and we will prioritise it.

What warranty do I get on a clutch replacement?

Twelve months on parts and labour. The labour half is the part worth checking anywhere you get a clutch done, because on a clutch the labour is most of the bill, and a parts-only warranty can leave you paying hundreds again to have a free part fitted. If anything related to our work goes wrong inside the year, we come back and put it right at no charge.

How long should a new clutch last?

Anywhere from 60,000 to well over 100,000 miles, and how you drive matters far more than the mileage itself. Constant stop-start town traffic, towing, hill starts and resting your foot on the pedal all shorten clutch life considerably. Steady motorway miles barely wear one at all. A clutch that has failed early has usually been slipped a lot rather than been a bad part.

Can I keep driving on a slipping clutch?

You can, but it is a false economy and we would advise against it. A slipping clutch generates real heat, and that heat can score, glaze or crack the flywheel. That is the difference between replacing a clutch kit and replacing a clutch kit plus a flywheel, which is a significantly bigger bill. If your revs rise without the car speeding up, or you can smell burning, get it looked at before it strands you.

Do you replace clutches on vans and pickups?

Yes. Vans, pickups, minibuses and motorhomes as well as cars. Commercial vehicles are often the ones that benefit most from a mobile replacement, because a van off the road for three days at a garage is three days of lost work. We can usually do a van on your yard or at the customer site you are working from.

What is a dual mass flywheel, and does my car have one?

A dual mass flywheel is two plates joined by heavy internal springs that absorb engine vibration before it reaches the gearbox, which is what makes a modern diesel feel smooth at low revs. Most diesels built since the late 1990s have one, along with a good number of modern petrols and almost anything with a lot of torque. Give us your registration and we will tell you exactly what your car runs, because it changes both the price and the job.

Do you have to replace the flywheel at the same time as the clutch?

Only if it has actually failed, and we measure it rather than guess. On every clutch replacement we check the flywheel's free play and its friction face while the gearbox is out. If it is within tolerance it stays. If it is worn, we will show you why, because fitting a new clutch to a worn dual mass flywheel brings the judder straight back and means taking the gearbox out a second time. That is the single most expensive mistake in this job.

Can a dual mass flywheel be converted to a solid one?

Usually yes, using a conversion kit with a sprung-centre clutch plate. It costs less than a replacement dual mass flywheel and tends to last longer, but it transmits more vibration into the cabin and the gearbox, and you will feel it at idle and low revs. That trade-off suits a hard-working van much better than a family car. We will tell you which we would fit to our own vehicle in your situation.
